"Lost within myselves"

“Lost within myselves” is a solo contemporary circus and aerial dance act created and performed by Elli Skourogianni. In this piece the artist takes the audience through a personal exploration, a trip, to the different “parts of herself” that constitute and compose her identity. Created during Covid19 latest lockdowns, the act premiered in the aerial dance festival “Les Rencontres de danse Aérienne 2022” in Saint Nazaire (FR) as a 7 minute act. It is now being developed to a full show with the support of La Voliere, where Elli will be their associate artist from September 2023 and for the coming years. 

A work very different from her previous creations, being fed and guided by vulnerability and inner retrospection. The artist uses only her body and her hoop and speaks in this piece through aerial dance, using the aerial hoop and contortion to dive deep into the internal fights, struggles and balances that compose herself. Using movement and her physicality to explore feelings and sensations of being in control while letting loose, being sure while following the uncertainty, being graceful while unrefined and smooth while strong and sharp. Looking at the self in pieces, all differently sized fragments that may assemble and fuse to a whole but never entirely cohere!? Identity can be as fluid and also as complex as a body contorting through different shapes. Or like a collage, composed of different materials all coming together in a multilayered “image” that has been the result of all these fragments being pieced together after different experiences and over time. A journey where the artist reflects upon her selfhood’s unstable, multilayered and ever-changing terrain. “Lost within myselves” brings what’s under the surface to the surface.
